چکیده

We propose a communication-driven mechanism for predicting triadic closure in complex networks. It is mathematically formulated on the basis of communicability distance functions that account for the “goodness” of communication between nodes in the network. We study 25 real-world networks and show that the proposed method predicts correctly 20% of triadic closures in these networks, in contrast to the 7.6% predicted by a random mechanism. We also show that the communication-driven method outperforms the random mechanism in explaining the clustering coefficient, average path length, average communicability, and degree heterogeneity of a network. The new method also displays some interesting features toward its use for optimizing communication and degree heterogeneity in networks.

Topological Properties and Temporal Dynamics of Place Networks in Urban Environments

Understanding the spatial networks formed by the trajectories of mobile users can be beneficial to applications ranging from epidemiology to local search. Despite the potential for impact in a number of fields, several aspects of human mobility networks remain largely unexplored due to the lack of large-scale data at a fine spatiotemporal resolution. Using a longitudinal dataset from the locati...

Triadic analysis of affiliation networks

The widely-used notion of triadic closure has been conceptualized and measured in a variety of ways, most famously the clustering coefficient. This paper proposes a measure of triadic closure in affiliation networks designed to control for the influence of bicliques. In order to avoid arbitrariness, the paper introduces a triadic framework for affiliation networks, within which a range of possi...

A Will Triadic Closure Strengthen Ties in Social Networks?

The social triad—a group of three people—is one of the simplest and most fundamental social groups. Extensive network and social theories have been developed to understand its structure, such as triadic closure and social balance. Over the course of a triadic closure—the transition from two ties to three among three users, the strength dynamics of its social ties, however, are much less well un...

Hyperspherical embedding of graphs and networks in communicability spaces

Let G be a simple connected graph with n nodes and let fαk (A) be a communicability function of the adjacency matrix A, which is expressible by the following Taylor series expansion:  ∞ k=0 αkA k. We prove here that if fαk (A) is positive semidefinite then the function ηp,q = (fαk (A)pp+ fαk (A)qq−2fαk (A)pq) 1 2 is a Euclidean distance between the corresponding nodes of the graph. Then, we pr...

Uncovering the Formation of Triadic Closure in Social Networks

The triad is one of the most basic human groups in social networks. Understanding factors affecting the formation of triads will help reveal the underlying mechanisms that govern the emergence and evolution of complex social networks. In this paper, we study an interesting problem of decoding triadic closure in social networks. Specifically, for a given closed triad (a group of three people who...
